In Loving Memory of Mildred

Two years ago today, my precious sister went home to be with the Lord at the age of 77 years old. I loved her so very much and miss her terribly! I know she is in a better place free of pain, but there are days when I wish she was still here on this earth so I could call her on the phone or go to visit her and see her smiling face.

The death of a sibling is heart-rending. This is something I had never experienced before. My oldest brother, Leander, died when I was about 4 years old, so I really don't remember much about how I felt, though I did miss him. My comfort in suffering the loss of Mildred is knowing that finally, after years of pain in her body, she is pain free. My greatest comfort is knowing she had given her life to Jesus Christ and she is now in Heaven with Him. I don't know how people, who do not know this about their loved one, survive when that person passes away.

(In the first picture, she was 17 years old. Isn't Mildred beautiful?)

On April 13th of this year, if Mildred were here, we would have celebrated her 79th birthday. She was born in 1927. I have so many wonderful memories of Mildred--some I have written about in previous posts. I would love to hear about your memories of Mildred. At the end of this post is a place for you to leave a comment and write something in her memory.

  • I am sad too at the loss of one so lovely and precious as our dear Mildred. I loved her name because it was my mother's middle name and I understand that she was proud of the fact that she was named after her Aunt Doris. Just a few years ago, Mary Ellen brought Mildred to my house for a nice visit. We all 3 had a LOVELY time and we did a lot of digging for family history in Dade County and went to see some places of interest regarding our family history. I remember taking them to see the school in Everton that our Grandfather, Thomas Sims (Poppy) built. I got a picture of Mildred and Mary on the steps pointing towards the chimney of the school that still is there after many years. Poppy Sims built that part of the school and the chimney as well as a little barber shop just a couple of miles North of Everton that is still standing as well. Uncle Al thinks it was built sometime in the 1930s. We all enjoyed being together and I really got acquainted with a cousin that I had never been around that much before. SHE WAS SO SWEET.

Then for the last 2 years on my birthday, I have gotten a Happy Birthday message from Mildred on E-mail as she had set it up to automatically wish me a happy birthday. It was strange getting the message that first year after she had already gone to be with the Lord, but this year, I kinda was looking forward to hearing from her. It almost seems like she is still with us. I LOVE YOU SWEET MILDRED and I KNOW YOU ARE IN A MUCH BETTER PLACE RESTING IN JESUS' ARMS. TELL MY MOMMA HI FOR ME. OK?

  • Mary Ellen, you just did an awesome job on your beloved sister Mildred memory. In the picture of her in the dark hair she favors June and I when we had dark hair or, at least I can see it. I just love to read your and Janets Blog. keep it up ladies! Gladys

  • Mom, You once again have done a terrific job. You are very talented. Just wanted to say how much I miss Aunt Mildred too. I am so used to sharing my birthday with her. The last two years just have not been the same. Even if Mildred and I could not be together for our birthdays we at least could talk on the phone. I do however have the peace of knowing that when I get to go to heaven, I know, without a doubt, that Aunt Mildred will be there waiting for me.
